 Italy’s Monte dei Paschi di Siena launched separate all-share bids totalling about €34 billion ($40 billion) ‌for Banco BPM and Banca Generali on Friday, in an attempt to repel a hostile takeover by Intesa Sanpaolo.

Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena shares surged as much as 11.46% in Milan trading after Italy’s largest bank Intesa Sanpaolo unveiled a €30.6 billion takeover bid for the Tuscan lender, a deal that would create one of Europe’s biggest financial groups.
