The European Central Bank needs to keep interest rates high to curb inflation in the medium term, its president Christine Lagarde said on Friday, signalling more monetary tightening.

After more than a year of warnings, Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey says the U.K. is now experiencing a wage-price spiral despite 12 consecutive central bank interest rate hikes.

The European Central Bank will have to keep raising interest further to bring inflation back to its mid-term goal of 2% though most of the tightening has already been done, ECB’s Vice President Luis de Guindos said on Thursday.

Raphael Bostic, the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, said Monday he does not expect any interest-rate cuts this year because inflation is likely to be stickier than those in markets believe, and if anything “we may have to go up”.

European Central Bank interest rate hikes are in their final stretch, ECB Vice President Luis de Guindos told an Italian newspaper, while warning that higher borrowing costs could put stress on banks’ asset quality, even if indicators so far remain healthy.

Swedish central bank Deputy Governor Per Jansson weighed the need for a bigger hike than the half-percentage point raise adopted by rate-setters at the Riksbank’s most recent meeting in April, he said on Friday.
