Railroads Norfolk Southern(NSC) and Union Pacific(UNP) announced their intent to merge on Tuesday, creating “America’s First Transcontinental Railroad.”

Union Pacific is in talks to merge with Norfolk Southern, according to The Wall Street Journal, in a deal that would shake up the railroad business in America.

Union Pacific reported a fourth-quarter profit on Thursday that rose 7% on the back of higher grain and fertilizer shipments and core pricing gains, sending the railroad operator’s shares up more than 4% before the bell.
